Sir, – Your report (“Immigrant HSE workers reluctant to report racist incidents”, Home News, August 11th) is most concerning especially given the increasing anti-migrant sentiment in Ireland.
In her 2005 annual report on racial equality and racism submitted to the Oireachtas, special rapporteur Dr Ebun Joseph proposes mandatory training in anti-racism, equality and cultural competency as a requirement for all public sector staff. Considering the growing problem of racism this is a sensible and reasonable proposal.
If Ireland is truly genuine about its appreciation of the economic contribution of migrant workers, then the very least we can do is to take their concerns about racism seriously.
Your report states that diversity training for HSE managers is only to be rolled out for a small number of them. Surely the HSE, the State’s largest employer, can do better than this. – Yours, etc,
