Trains and bicycles

Sir, – On bank holiday Monday (April 18th), a friend and I decided to cycle the great facility that is the Royal Canal Greenway. He lives in Dublin and I in Kildare. We decided to get the train from Maynooth to Mullingar and cycle back to Maynooth. On further research, we discovered the first available train was at 9.45am, which is hardly the crack of dawn, but we bought our tickets and proceeded, only to be told by the conductor that the train only had a capacity to carry four bicycles and was full.

Hardly a fair ratio!

Four bikes for 250 passengers in this great and supposedly green country we strive to achieve. – Yours, etc,

WILLIE DOWNEY,
