Sir, – Having set out to clarify the correctness of "Peterhouse" (with or without the addition of "College") and Albany (with or without the "The"), Frank McNally refers to other connections with the character Raffles (An Irishman's Diary, August 6th).
Unlike “Piccadilly”, “Mayfair”, etc, Frank incorrectly considers that Raffles’s “Sullivan” cigarettes were fictional. On the contrary, Sullivans were a brand of oriental cigarettes and tobaccos sold by Sullivan Powell Ltd based in Hanover Square, Mayfair, and Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly.
Sullivan Powell, according to their own advertising, were “tobacco blenders to the nobility since 1880”. – Yours, etc,
