Middle-classes and incentives to work

Sir, – My colleague Senator Michael McDowell asks us to ponder whether PUP payments may be linked to a "reduced incentive for economic participation" (Opinion, October 27th).

As leader of the Progressive Democrats he famously championed tax reductions for business, cuts to capital gains taxes and a “substantial” middle-class tax cut.

It’s a strange logic that determines that the rich require more money to incentivise economic participation whilst the poor apparently require less.
