Sir, – Prediction of the future by extrapolation of statistical trends, as invoked by Brian O'Brien (Letters, April 28th), is fraught with danger.
Extrapolation of the graph of the rising Dow Jones index before the Wall Street Crash did not work out well for many.
Extrapolation of the graph of growing support for the Progressive Democrats in their early days would clearly not have predicted their medium-term future.
The consequences of extrapolation of the graph of rising Irish property values in the early days of this century were financially disastrous for large numbers of people.
