Drama and the classroom

Sir, – John Cradden's article "What would Irish teachers based abroad change about our schools?" (Education, March 20th) raises some excellent suggestions.

To add another – drama, theatre and the other performing arts are markedly absent in Irish secondary education while a mainstay of almost all international school curriculums. Drama builds confidence and expression, collaborative skills and creative problem-solving – surely all valuable skills for the modern world.

For a country with such a rich history of playwrights, actors and directors, to not embed meaningful study of drama and theatre at second level is both inexplicable and unfortunate. – Yours, etc,
