Private security on O’Connell Street would be undemocratic

It is disturbing that the proposers have no comment to make on the reported initiative

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – The fact that the proposal for security staff to be allowed police Dublin city (“Private security to patrol Dublin city centre under new proposals”, , November 4th) was not the lead headline in The Irish Times could be seen as a striking example of the Overton window, a shift in public discourse which accepts discussion of what would previously have been regarded as unthinkable.

Dublin city is a public space, and its care and security are the responsibility of its elected representatives on Dublin City Council and in Dáil Éireann, and of An Garda Síochána.

Dublin citizens rely on their city council to successfully resist this anti-democratic proposal. – Yours, etc,

DAVID McKENNA,

Dublin 8.
