Banks, diggers and ATMs

Sir, – The technology to render bank notes unusable by coating them in indelible ink when they are removed by force from a container has been in existence for many years. Yet we repeatedly read of ATMs being ripped from their housings in banks and shops by criminals using diggers, as highlighted in news reports of incidents in Cavan and Tyrone at the weekend.

Why do the banks persist in avoiding the use of technology which would bring this kind of crime to a stop at once? – Yours, etc,
