Trump blind to irony or just a sneering bully?

Keith Duggan’s portrayal of the president’s indifference to division and strife inflicted on the midwest hits the mark

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - I would like to commend Keith Duggan on his superb depiction of the American heartland (“Sublime evenings and empty downtowns: Democrats threaten comeback in America’s heartland”, US, October 9th).

Towards the end of the article, I found his portrayal of Donald Trump’s indifference to the division and strife he has inflicted on the midwest to be among the finest I have read.

Trump’s recital of The Snake is reflective of his odious character and the poem is almost chillingly reminiscent of the relationship between the president and the midwestern working class.

Is he oblivious to this, his sense of irony worn by years of decline? Or did he know exactly what he was doing and mocking us all? - Yours, etc,

MARK MORAN,

Stillorgan,
