Jostlestones prevented damage to the wheels of carriages and traps in days gone by

Sir, – Frank McDonald is to be congratulated on providing an answer to a question for many of your readers of a certain age (Irishman’s Diary, October 8th).

By identifying those pillar or column-like stones that lie on either side of the entrances to our older estates and houses as jostlestones, he has allowed many of us to finally stop wondering what they were called.

Now we can dement our walking and travelling companions by pointing out these jostlestones and describing how they prevented damage to the wheels of carriages and traps as they turned to enter older properties. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN CULLEN,

Sandyford,
