We must think outside the box to tackle road carnage

Maximise technology to detect road breaches as they happen

Sir, – Urgent steps need to be taken to avoid another tragedy as occurred recently on the M9. Perhaps a video surveillance system could be devised for motorway exit ramps.

The cameras would be designed to detect any vehicle entering the ramp, rather than exiting it. This system would have to include a means of transmitting an alert to the Garda so that a rapid response could be made to stop the vehicle.

Warning signs of “Do Not Enter” apparently are not enough to deter such dangerous driving. – Yours, etc,

Give DPP a stronger hand

Sir, – A very simple way to cater for the recent serious driving incidents is to amend section 53 of the Road Traffic Act (dangerous driving) to make the offence a hybrid offence. This would give the DPP the option to try offences on indictment in the Circuit Criminal Court or summarily in the District Court, which is the present position. – Yours, etc,

HUGH SHERIDAN,

Retired State solicitor,

Cummeen,

Sligo.
