Sir, – I’m not sure what metrics John Redmond applies when passing judgment on the wisdom of Donald Trump, but it’s obviously not widely shared (“Ireland should give Donald Trump a courteous welcome,” Letters, August 21st).
Stating that Trump gets it right on the big strategic issues ignores, among other things, the disaster of the illegal attack on Iran, the long-term damage done to US public services by unleashing Elon Musk and his DOGE team, the upturning of global trade with his reactionary trade tariffs and the undermining of United States democracy through his interference in the judiciary there.
Trump is only interested in one thing, which is the projection of his ego to feed his insatiable need for attention. He rules through belligerence, happily facilitated by his inner circle. His so-called strategic view of the world is anything but strategic and is becoming increasingly chaotic with significant ramifications for the wider world.
I would encourage people to come out and ensure he understands that Ireland does not stand for his world view. Pandering to his narcissism only encourages his behaviour. It’s beyond time to declare this emperor has no clothes. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – David Lyons asks what sort of security has the Government in mind for Trump when he is in Ireland (Letters, August 21st). May I suggest that there must be a spare catering truck that could be provided if not already in use. – Yours, etc,
