Wit or Witout You is a collaboration between Wicklow Wolf and Mescan Brewery in Westport. Given that Mescan specialises in Belgian-style beers, it is not surprising they went for a Belgian Witbier (or wheat beer).

“It’s made using a Belgian Abbaye yeast,” Quincey Fennelly, chief executive of Wicklow Wolf Brewing Company, says. “We put Sabro hops into the whirlpool and a ton of orange peel, coriander and black peppercorns, to give it a right big kick of orange and coriander. It’s a crushable beer to knock back on a sunny day.”

This is a limited edition. Retailing for around €3.50, it was released on May 3rd, so catch it while you can.

The second beer joining the Wicklow Wolf core range is Tundra. “It is a New England IPA with 5.6 per cent abv, made using a ton of Sabro hops. One of the beers I idolise most is Juicy Bits from WeldWerks Brewing in Colorado. This is our version, all juicy pineapples. It’s gorgeous; we have tasted it against Juicy Bits and it is every bit as good.”

Tundra is available in Wicklow Wolf’s new taproom and at independent off licences, just in time for that summer sun. A 440ml can retails for €3.

Fennelly says that the company’s pub sales have increased. “My theory is people didn’t have confidence to buy it in a pub before, in case they didn’t like it. Now they know they like it – because they sat drinking it at home during lockdown.”
