An Irish woman was found dead at a house in a suburb near Melbourne, Australia, on Friday morning.

A statement from Victoria police said a man was arrested after the woman was found dead at a residential property at Ferntree Gully.

Emergency services were called to the house on Ferntree Gully Road just before 10am on Friday and located an injured woman.

Despite efforts to revive the woman, she was declared dead at the scene.

Police said the woman had yet to be identified.

A man (45) was arrested nearby and remains in custody. Police said it was believed the man and woman were known to each other.

9News, an Australian national news outlet, reported the man had not been charged.

A crime scene has been established and homicide squad detectives are attending the scene.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said the department was aware of this case and was providing consular assistance. “As with all consular case, the department does not comment on the details of individual cases,” the spokeswoman said.
