South by southwest for Metro

Sir, – The vote by South Dublin County Council proposing that the Metro should run along the Rathmines to Rathfarnham axis in the capital is another affirmation of the popular support for the concept (News, February 11th).

I would suggest that the National Transport Authority (NTA), still deliberating over the Metro, should try a bit of lateral thinking and consider swinging the route southwestwards from St Stephen’s Green (or thereabouts) to cover the route to Rathfarnham.

As the most fundamental principle of transport planning is to place infrastructure where there is demand. By aligning the Metro thus, the NTA would provide a higher-capacity solution to one of the most densely populated areas of Dublin, currently not served by any form of mass-transit. – Yours, etc,
