Scoliosis patients and waiting lists

Sir, – Regarding the treatment of children suffering from scoliosis, while the desire of consultants to increase resources to carry out this surgery in Ireland is to be commended, the current waiting list would suggest that this is unlikely to happen in the near-future.

Delaying essential surgery for children suffering from scoliosis is wrong, when expert facilities are available immediately by way of treatment abroad. Surely one solution does not exclude the other.

Why can we not use the expert facilities available now for those patients that are suitable for treatment abroad, which would then expedite the services available at home for those children who would benefit from this? – Yours, etc,

ALAN GILL,
