Sir, – Your correspondent, Jim McGuinness (Sports Weekend, September 18th) is not alone in his use of the misnomer "marquee" to describe elite players in GAA and other sports.
Surely the correct term should be “marque” derived from the French word for “brand”, used originally in the context of sport to describe a superior, successful motor racing vehicle or team.
