Inequality and a pandemic

Sir, – My colleague Senator Paul Gavan repeats the untruth peddled by Sinn Féin as far back as 2007 that I once "famously" stated that inequality was "good" (Letters, September 4th). The record shows that I never said that inequality was "good", but that in a dynamic economy flexibility and incentive made some degree of inequality necessary and inevitable. My opinion article of September 2nd pointed out that the economically vulnerable need a performing economy at least as much and probably much more than the wealthy, and that poverty is a killer and destroyer of lives. – Yours, etc,
