Filipino nurses prop up our health system

Sir, – I read with interest Sorcha Pollak's article (Weekend Review, July 29th) on Filipino nurses in the Irish nursing system.

In June 1953 I was one of the many young people who had to go to England to work. I trained as a nurse in London. At times life was very difficult. There was a lot of resentment from other staff. However, we only had ourselves to worry about. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have to leave your children behind.

Ireland is supposed to be a Christian country. Somewhere along the line we have lost our humanity. Without the wonderful sacrifices these wonderful women make, the Irish health system would indeed be in a sorry state. – Yours, etc,

ANGELA LEWIS,
