Sir, – Thank you to Peter Lynch for a fascinating piece of mathematical wizardry and detective work ("The case of the postcard, the boy on Dún Laoghaire pier and some school trigonometry", Science, May 19th). I shared the subject of the article with children in school who were really impressed (not an easy thing to do nowadays) by his clever use of maths to solve a problem. A salient lesson to anyone who questions the point of trigonometry or even maths. – Yours, etc,
