Coveney and Northern Ireland

Sir, – Although Sinn Féin triggered the collapse of the Northern Executive in 2017, they were unable to resolve this over a three-year period and relied on Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney to progress a resolution with the Northern Ireland Secretary, Julian Smith, to restore the Executive.

Given the lack of confidence Sinn Féin are now raising with Coveney’s ability to undertake his ministerial role, can we expect Sinn Féin, as one of the key parties in the Northern Ireland Assembly, to take a lead role in ensuring the Northern Ireland protocol remain as originally negotiated or will they depend on the Minister to ensure this if he retains his portfolio?

– Yours, etc,

SIOBHAN O’SHEA,
