A united Ireland

A chara, – Whether Michael O'Loughlin ("We need to stop talking about a united Ireland", November 22nd) likes it or not I am going to keep on talking about the reunification of Ireland simply because that is the only way the citizens of Ireland will ever experience and enjoy living in a modern democracy.

Sir, – The headline over Michael O’Loughlin’s geo-politicising opinion piece (November 22nd) should read, “We need to START talking about a united Ireland".

In a debate now spurred by the shifting sands of Brexit and economic opportunity, a first-past-the-post notion is no longer countenanced by our more astute commentators such as the late Seamus Mallon, and a weighted majority in any Border poll is what is in view by all who care about the wellbeing of this country.
