State’s doomsday funding crisis is inevitable

Government should focus on making itself ‘emergency ready’

Sir, – Mark Fox is correct to question whether the Government itself is “emergency ready” (“Is the Government emergency ready?“, Letters, October 13th). When, not if, the billions in corporation tax paid by US multinationals shift back to the United States or are carved up among the European Union member states, the State will be plunged into a funding crisis like 2008. If the excess tax had been expended on capital projects, the impact might be limited, but with current expenditure absorbing much of the windfall, the impact will be lacerating.

Instead of lecturing the public on being “emergency ready” for events beyond their control, the Government should be preparing its own plans for the additional taxes and expenditure cuts for the State’s inevitable doomsday funding crisis. – Yours, etc,

DAVID LOUGHLIN,

Rathmines,
