A chara, – Mike Moran asks where the tractors were during Donald Trump’s visit to Ireland (Letters, September 15th). I ask: where was official Ireland?
Other than President Catherine Connolly, operating within the confines of the office, not a single member of the Government said a word against Trump. Nor did anyone in the world of big business, journalism or sport.
This was a weekend of national humiliation for official Ireland. But at least there was a cut in whiskey tariffs. Faust, etc. – Is mise le meas,

Sir, - The US president Donald Trump disarmed his Irish hosts. We thought we were masters in the art of plamás. Well, it seems we’re only in the halfpenny place.
From his robust and unflinching comments on Irish unity to the gesture of eliminating tariffs on Irish whiskey, this was a master class in statecraft from Trump. His impact in less than two days was unbelievable. It’s obvious his ideological opponents were caught off guard.
Whether one is a fan of Trump or not, there is no denying he has a strong presence. One only hopes it can be harnessed to the good. - Yours, etc,
