Sir, - The Dublin City Half Marathon takes place this bank holiday weekend. I would like to wish all participants a wonderful race day. I hope those running will be considerate in how they dispose of their rubbish, most notably water bottles, plastic wrappers and energy gels.
We are coming to the end of a hugely successful National Spring Clean month (April) across the country, where thousands of volunteers and tidy town committees made an even bigger effort to clean up their locality.
Please don’t let their hard work be in vain on race day. If you can carry your bottle and gels full you can carry them empty until you reach a bin or official waste disposal area. After last year’s race I filled several bags with litter and picked up more than 200 energy gels before I stopped counting. Please think of all the volunteers who tidy up after the event and help minimise the clean-up they will do this Sunday. – Yours, etc,
SIOBHÁN McDERMOTT,
