Sir, – As the dust settles on our World Cup qualifier defeat in Prague, much of the reaction has, perhaps understandably, focused on the result. To view this performance as failure is to miss the deeper significance of what occurred on the night.
Happily, this Irish team did not falter through lack of courage or conviction. On the contrary, their display was one of resilience, organisation and growing belief.
Against a strong opponent, they showed a willingness to compete, to adapt and to persist – qualities that suggest a team in the early stages of renewal.
There are moments in sport when results lag behind progress, when the scoreboard does not yet reflect the foundations. We are seeing the emergence of a new era in Irish international football – one built on discipline, unity and a clearer sense of identity.

Equally deserving of recognition are the supporters who travelled in such numbers to Prague. Their unwavering backing, in full voice from first whistle to last, was a testament to the enduring spirit of Irish football supporters. This enthusiasm is unlikely to dissipate in the face of a brave defeat. In many ways, they represent the very best of Ireland.
Progress in football, as in life, is rarely linear. But if this performance is any indication of the team’s progression, there is genuine reason for optimism. The result may not have gone Ireland’s way, but the direction of travel is clear – and it is forward. - Yours, etc,
