If it wasn’t there, where would we be?

Sir, – In the midst of the current discussion regarding gridlock on the M50, dare one posit that it actually works? If it wasn’t there, where would we be?

We’d still be without all the houses built in its catchment area. The construction of the M50 has enabled the provision of massive industrial and commercial parks along its entire route, providing tens of thousands of jobs.

The importance of the M50 is not just about national connectivity or whether traffic is free-flowing. Motorways are also essential in opening hitherto adjacent undeveloped lands for the provision of housing, employment and recreation.

To cater for the needs of our future generations, clearly an outer eastern orbital route – including the much-maligned eastern bypass – will need to be built. – Yours, etc,

LARRY DUNNE,

Rosslare,
