A mother and her three-year-old son were killed this morning in a house fire in Cork city. Gardaí this evening named the deceased as Ms Lorraine Sheehan and her son Glyenn.

Ms Sheehan's two-year-old daughter Caitlin and the children's father Mr Richard O'Neill, who were also in the house at Churchfield Gardens in the Gurranabraher area when the fire broke out, were taken to hospital.

Their condition was not thought to be serious.

The fire started in a downstairs room of the house, and the cause was thought to have been accidental.

The 25-year-old woman who died was believed to have been trying to rescue the child.
