A young man was seriously injured after he was "ejected" from the rear window of a vehicle when it crashed in Co Limerick, Sunday.

Gardaí believe four men were traveling in a silver car, understood to be a Toyota Avensis, which left the road between Croom and Adare shortly before 2pm.

The injured man, believed to have been a passenger in the car was thrown from the vehicle upon impact. Gardaí believe the three other occupants of the car left the scene and ran away across fields and did not wait for the arrival of emergency services.

According to sources the injured man, aged in his 30s, was “ejected out the car’s back window” and sustained serious head injuries.

The crash occurred about 500 yards from the Woodlands House Hotel on a straight stretch the Croom to Adare (R516) road.

Emergency services received a 999 alert at 2pm that the car had rolled over and that there may be casualties on board with serious injuries.

When emergency services arrived at the scene they discovered a man lying in the middle of the road with serious head injuries. Gardai believe the three other occupants left the scene via some fields in the area.

“It was a bad enough crash and he has a bad head injury,” a source said.

The injured man was conscious at the scene and spoke to gardaí. The injured man has been taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
