The Hawthorn: Galway Bay’s new chapter in Irish luxury

Opening soon at Renville, The Hawthorn by Galway Bay brings a new standard of Irish luxury to the Wild Atlantic Way, with spa, dining and golf

Set along the shores of the Wild Atlantic Way at Renville, The Hawthorn by Galway Bay is one of the most significant new additions to Irish hospitality this year. Opening soon, the 114-key destination with a spa, two restaurants and a championship golf course, it brings a new standard of five-star experience to the country’s west coast, and a notable moment for Galway.

The design speaks to its setting before it speaks of itself. Interiors are built from natural materials, warm woods, stone, soft layered textiles and a palette drawn from sea, sand and sunrise. Bespoke furnishings sit against contemporary lines and throughout the public spaces there is a considered calm that feels unmistakably Irish in its restraint.

At the heart of the experience is connection, to landscape to craft, and to the rhythm of the coast. The 18-hole championship course, designed by Ryder Cup golfer Christy O’Connor Jnr, unfolds across the shoreline with uninterrupted views towards the Burren and the bay. For guests less drawn to the fairways, the surrounding terrain rewards a slower pace: coastal cycle routes, birdwatching along the inner bay and quiet walks through the adjoining Renville Woods.

Food has been given serious weight. The Skylark, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is anchored by a live open grill, where west of Ireland produce is cooked over charcoal in a confident, elemental style that feels refreshingly unornamented. The Oystercatcher Bar takes a different tack, a more relaxed setting where Japanese cuisine, developed in collaboration with the acclaimed Cork-based chef Takashi Miyazaki, is paired with a carefully considered cocktail list. It is an unexpected pairing for this corner of the Atlantic.

Wellness, too, has been conceived with intent. The Spa at The Hawthorn is a destination in its own right, shaped by the restorative qualities of the Atlantic coast and designed for complete escape. A considered collection of facilities includes Finnish and infrared saunas, a snow room with cold plunge pool, indoor and outdoor vitality pools, an outdoor Jacuzzi, six private Atlantic seaweed baths, a relaxation lounge, a fully-equipped gym and five treatment rooms including a dedicated couples suite.

The spa is the exclusive Irish home of Tata Harper and, through a partnership with Maison Caulières, offers signature rituals centred around botanical oils, mineral-rich ingredients, Atlantic salt and seaweed. It is a place created not simply for treatments, but for restoration, stillness and a deeper connection to the landscape beyond.

The Hawthorn by Galway Bay is now open for bookings. To mark the occasion, guests are invited to experience the opening season exclusive: stays booked direct for June include a complimentary upgrade to a suite and a chilled bottle of Champagne on arrival. Book your stay at thehawthornhotel.ie
