The newly merged team formed by Bray Wanderers and Cabinteely will play under the name of the Wicklow club.

In a press briefing on Friday, the merged entity’s director of football Pat Devlin and chairman Tony Richardson announced that the Bray Wanderers name will remain unchanged and that the team’s colours will be green and white, the same as the Seagulls’ traditional colours.

The merger was announced by both clubs last month, with Cabinteely chairman Richardson taking over the same role at the new club as Bray counterpart Niall O’Driscoll retired. Cabinteely director of football Devlin was kept on in the same role.

It was then announced that Bray’s Carlisle Grounds would host the new club and that it had also applied for first division status.

Speaking at the announcement of the team’s name and colours on Friday, Devlin said the following:

“We want to embrace the whole Wicklow area. Cabinteely have a major role to play. We want to be inclusive. We want to work together.

“We want to compete at the highest level of football in Ireland. We intend to make this the best we can.

“Cabinteely is the pathway. But we want to develop all our underage. We want to have the best players in Wicklow and South Dublin but with an international perspective. We want to develop, we have had contacts with several countries already like Holland, Belgium and Germany.”

Richardson went on to speak of the role of the FAI in the merger:

“The FAI have been encouraging. The combination of the two clubs has caused a headache on one side. From a football perspective, the FAI have been supportive. We’re involved in the licensing process at the moment.”

It was confirmed that the club’s League of Ireland underage teams will be called Cabinteely FC.
