Soccer:Derby County's Paul Green has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2012 after midfielder Keith Fahey was ruled out with a groin strain on Saturday evening.

The Birmingham City player has been struggling with the injury since joining up with the squad but it was thought he was on the mend until today, when he felt a strain prior to the 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Aviva Stadium.

“He was scanned following the match,” according to the FAI. “The FAI medical team have just received the results of the scan which showed unfortunately that his groin strain was persisting.

“The results were discussed with the player and he agreed that would not recover fully in time for Euro 2012. As a result, he is departing from the squad and Paul Green is being called in.

“Giovanni Trapattoni spoke to the player who is very disappointed to miss out on Euro 2012 and told him that he remains part of his plans for the future.”

It is an unfortunate turn of events for the former St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder, who arrived early for the training camp on May 17th, in order to shake off the injury.

During the week, it was thought he had succeeded in doing so, and he was, until today, in contention to start against Bosnia.

Green featured in four qualifiers for Ireland and was among five players, along with Paul McShane, who has already been called upon, named on the standby list.
