For homeowners in need of more space, moving house is no longer the only option. Extensions, garden rooms and modular homes are providing practical ways to adapt existing properties to changing family needs and lifestyles.

Modular homes are firmly in the spotlight in 2026, following recently announced changes to planning regulations that could make it easier for some homeowners to create additional living space on their property.

At the PTSB Ideal Home Show, RDS Simmonscourt, October 16th-18th, visitors can see modular homes and garden rooms first hand, step inside different structures and speak directly with suppliers about design, construction, installation, planning and cost.

“Modular homes are generating huge interest because people can see the potential to use the space they already have differently,” says exhibition director Caitriona O’Connor. “Homeowners have lots of questions, particularly around the new regulations and what is possible on their own property. Being able to see the options and speak directly to the companies involved is invaluable.”

The Build, Extend & Modular Homes Zone brings together builders, specialist contractors, modular home companies and suppliers for those considering renovations and extensions, while the Self-Builder Zone offers products, building solutions and specialist advice for anyone planning their own build.

At the PhoneWatch Ask an Expert Hub, visitors can avail of free one-to-one consultations covering architecture, interiors, landscaping, retrofit and energy efficiency.

The Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan Home Advice Theatre will host talks throughout the weekend on building, renovating and retrofitting, with Dermot Bannon among the experts taking to the stage.
