The Government says it intends to introduce a referendum on the Eighth Amendment, the constitutional provision that prohibits abortion in almost all cases.
Before a referendum takes place, the Dáil and Seanad must vote in favour. The Irish Times asked all TDs and Senators if they were in favour of repeal of the Eighth Amendment. We also asked TDs if they favoured proposals for unrestricted access to abortion up to 12 weeks. Their responses are collated below. In the case of Oireachtas members who did not respond, past statements and voting records were taken into account in seeking to ascertain their views.
