Sir, – It is disappointing to see the consistent contempt for facts and evidence set forth by opponents of renewable energy (Letters, July 3rd).
According to figures from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), wind energy provided 36 per cent of Ireland’s electricity last year and, in 2019 alone, reduced our carbon emissions by four million tonnes.
Carbon emissions from our electricity system are now lower than they were in 1990.
Wind also reduces the wholesale price of electricity as confirmed by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), the energy regulator, the CRU, energy analysts Baringa and independent energy supplier, Naturgy.
Wind energy is not the sole solution to decarbonising our energy supply but it will play the chief role in reducing carbon emissions in our electricity system.
It will do so alongside other renewable technologies, such as solar power, and supporting technologies like energy storage and demand response.
Those who wish to deny the facts can try all they want but more and more people understand the reality that we face a global climate crisis. Wind energy is part of the solution.
