What a grey day in Smithfield

Sir, – I would like to commend Dublin City Council on its fine addition of the large grey emulsion mural to Smithfield Square. The work is vastly superior to the highly colourful and artistic mural it replaces which was drawing hundreds of extra unnecessary visitors to the Smithfield area. A €5,000 planning application fee was precisely the correct bureaucratic response to that.

The grey fits in well with the grey bunker-like buildings already built by the council on the square and also ties in neatly with the grey plywood hoarding erected by the OPW. No doubt like them this new addition will soon attract some graffiti, something the previous art piece had failed to do. Graffiti on grey, it’s Dublin’s way.
