Waxing lyrical

Sir, – Alison Healy writes that "some place-names just inspire songwriters" (An Irishwoman's Diary, January 7th) and then proceeds to cast shade on a series of Irish town names in comparison to Georgia, Las Vegas and Tulsa.

Sir, – To Alison Healy’s list of well-known tunes that wouldn’t have sounded quite as exotic or as romantic had the song titles contained specific references to places in Ireland, might we add “Sally Gap Lineman”; “Do You Know the Way to Kiltimagh?”; “By the Time I Get to Cabra”; “Hotel Cabinteely”; “(I Left My Heart) in Ballyfermot”; “Sweet Home Abbeylara; “South of the Border (Down Drumshanbo Way”); and “I’ve Got a Gal in Dublin Zoo”? – Yours, etc
