Twinkle twinkle little stars

Sir, – Deirdre Keane (December 28th) wants to know if she is living in a cave because she could identify only two stars to appear on the reality TV show Dancing With the Stars. I can assure Ms Keane that she is no troglodyte.

Here in the UK, the term "star" is banded about to describe the most ordinary character appearing on television, no more so than those who take part in one of the biggest entertainment beasts in Britain, "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

In the last series, a Stanley Johnson appeared as a contestant willing to take part in the dreadful feats to amuse the televised audience. Mr Johnson may well be the father of the British foreign secretary, but to define him as a celebrity or star is stretching the definition too far. – Yours, etc,
