Traffic and flexible working hours

Sir, – As traffic levels reach gridlock proportions in Dublin, I am always bemused at the lack of imagination of our wonderful city managers and elected representatives who delight in making the lives of the masses miserable by reversing the flow, or by closing the roads, thus adding confusion to the mix.

My solution is simple and workable. Our primary schools, office corporations and campuses should all open and close earlier, thus staggering the number of vehicles on our roads. Hospitals are on a 24-hour basis anyway, banks open at 10am, and with electronic mail there is simply no need for hundreds of thousands of people all to be at their desks at the same time each day.

Perhaps our legislators could now introduce for the rest of us the flexitime that they themselves enjoy? – Yours, etc,

CAITRIONA LAWLOR,
