To beep or not to beep

Sir, – Siobhan Ní Chuanaigh (June 22nd) asks what she should have done in response to the furious beeping from the red car behind whilst getting her ticket before entering a car park.

One course of action might have been to use the international “I’ll be less than a minute” signal as demonstrated by Robbie Williams during his song at the World Cup opening ceremony.

Another, and probably safer option, is to avoid entering carparks in front of red cars. People who own red cars are just so angry! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Sit in your car, facing forward. Slowly extend your right arm until it is parallel to your shoulder. Make a fist. Turn your fist upward, with your thumb facing the sky. Slowly extend your middle finger. Leave extended for three seconds, or until the car behind beeps.

Whichever is longer.

Close fist. Withdraw arm. Continue journey. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – A reader asks how she should have gestured to the hooter behind her. Yesterday I saw, on the back of a van, the following sign, “Horn broke. Look out for finger”. – Yours, etc,
