The coming of television

Sir, – It has been known for letter writers to highlight the infrastructure deficiencies in Donegal, sometimes even going so far as describing it as Ireland's forgotten county. How pleasant then to point out that the excitement described by Michael C O'Connor (Letters, January 20th) about the coming of TV to Ireland in the 1960s was nothing new to Donegal, where proximity to Northern Ireland had provided a TV signal for many years.

Even today a range of UK digital TV services are available in Donegal without the need for a satellite dish. Moreover, whereas the Republic has ceased to provide any DAB (digital audio broadcasting) services, a wide range of DAB channels are freely available here.

If only we had better roads and a railway we could share these facilities with visitors from the less advantaged parts of the country. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN O’SULLIVAN,
