The census and religion

Sir, – I concur with Michelle Rogers (Letters, March 8th) that data gleaned from the religion question on the census is likely to be unreliable.

However, I am more concerned by the notion that the provision of education would be determined by the numbers professing a particular religion or lack thereof.

Freedom of conscience and equality are at the heart of what it means to be a democracy and should be at the heart of all State-funded schools. Human rights are not for majorities, they are for all citizens. I suggest changing the census question to “Would you like your child to attend after-school religious instruction?” – Yours, etc,
