Terms of endearment?

Sir, – I really enjoyed Frank McNally's witty and entertaining article about the different honorifics conferred on him over the years (An Irishman's Diary, January 24th).

Should Frank pay a visit to Waterford, I forewarn him that, at some stage, he might be addressed as “well, boy”. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL C O’CONNOR,

Waterford.

Sir, – I share Frank McNally’s suspicion of the title “sir”. “Come up here, sir” was generally a prelude to being sore in my distant school days. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Further to Denis Staunton’s London Letter (January 19th), often, when travelling by taxi in London, one is greeted with the phrase “Morning, guv”. I am never sure what I am supposed to be governing, but it is a delightful conceit. – Yours, etc,
