Removal of tax credits for renters

Sir, – Enid O'Dowd (January 13th) makes a valid point. The reduction of tax credits for tenants can only further encourage people to buy homes. Some of these people will be put to the pin of their collars to make mortgage repayments, placing them at greater risk of losing these homes.

Housing provision in Ireland has long needed greater diversity. Security of tenure with leases that last more than 12 months would help make the rental sector a more attractive option.

With the reduction in local authority house building, and now this further reduction of tax credits, this Government is doing the very opposite to what is needed.– Yours, etc,

MARY CAULFIELD,
