Protecting against terror attacks

Sir, – The footage of the Westminster car attack (“Westminster car crash treated as terror attack, say police”, irishtimes.com, August 14th) shows a lack of a basic security measures which might have prevented the attack.

The driver was able to cross over a small pedestrian island, and onto the footpath in front of the parliament buildings because there were no bollards along the edges of either the pedestrian island or the footpath directly across from it and up towards the buildings.

Such devices can be easily installed and are of no great expense yet could provide a useful deterrent to cars or trucks being driven onto footpaths in front of prime locations, or along pedestrian walkways on bridges. – Yours, etc,

DAN DONOVAN,
