Proposed new digital tax on turnover

A chara, – Several European countries, rightly or wrongly, have been strongly critical of some of the tax policies adopted by Ireland and of current tax provisions generally within the EU, and have repeatedly characterised the same as “loopholes” and have clamoured loudly for “reform”.

This proposed new European Commission tax on digital turnover is but yet another phase in this campaign for “reform”.

In this regard I am wryly reminded of the words of the late Russell B Long, the American senator and sometime chairman of the US Senate finance committee, who said, “A tax loophole is something that benefits the other guy. If it benefits you it is tax reform”. – Is mise,
