Pregnancy medicines

A chara, – In the context of the recent budget and the Government’s mantra that there should be something for everyone, it is incredible that those in authority have not addressed the fact that effective medicines for treating hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy) are still not available on the medical card and other State-funded drug schemes.

Many medicines for treating this condition are not licensed in Ireland and can be difficult and very expensive for pharmacists to source. Therefore, their cost is prohibitive and a huge barrier for patients in this country.

Surely a duty of care to our pregnant women and their unborn, ensuring adequate access to treatment and preventing potential hospital admissions in the midst of a pandemic, should be a priority for our politicians and policymakers. – Yours, etc,
