Policing and uniforms

Sir, – It is not the non-wearing of neckties by the Garda or police that concerns me (August 21st).

Here in the UK, it is the dreadful visual persona that the police project in the uniform they don that worries me.

Their RoboCop image, with its aggressive militaristic stance, only distances them from the public they seek to connect with.

The overt display of handcuffs, incapacitating spray, mobile phone, taser gun and other paraphernalia are not conducive to the provision of a “service” we look for in the boys and girls in blue.
