Philosophical attitude

Sir, – Contrary to Prof Maggie Cusack's claim that the technological universities "won't be teaching philosophy" (Peter Maguire, "'We won't be teaching philosophy': Meet Ireland's five newest universities", Education, December 21st), in TU Dublin we do in fact teach philosophy. On the BA in Creative Industries and Visual Culture, for example, students have this semester alone grappled with the work of Habermas, Descartes, Astell, Bacon, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Wollstonecraft, and Kant, to list but a few. We do so precisely because we wish to prepare our students for work and to develop critically informed citizens. – Yours, etc,

Dr CONNELL VAUGHAN,

TU Dublin School
