Sir, – Further to recent correspondence (June 15th), the first female harbourmaster in Ireland was in Galway in the 1950s? I don't think so.

In 1952, Maggie Maloney, at the age of 84, retired as harbourmaster in Glin, Co Limerick. She had served since taking over the position on the death of her brother in 1919.

This not only made her the first female harbourmaster but also the oldest.

She is commemorated by a bust in our lovely square. – Yours, etc,
